Product Review: WÜSTHOF 8″ Uber Cook’s Knife

The Ranting Chef does not get paid or receive any revenue from manufacturers or retailers of products reviewed. I occasionally receive products that I am asked to use and see what I think. I take a look, try them out and tell you all about them.

It’s that time again, Review Time!!!

I was very happy to see a package come from WÜSTHOF. As you may already know, WÜSTHOF has been making fine knives in Germany for over 200 years.

What I found inside was the WÜSTHOF 8″ Uber Cook’s Knife.

What makes a knife Uber? This update to WÜSTHOF‘s classic cook’s knife has a few updates. One is a thinner blade which allows the knife to more easily slice through whatever you are cutting. It is sturdy and stays sharp through WÜSTHOF’s Precision Edge Technology (PEtec).

Look at the comparison to another of WÜSTHOF’s knives (Epicure 9″ Cook’s knife). The second change is the blade has more of a curve to it (also known as a “full belly”). This more naturally fits a nice rocking motion while chopping to allow a speedier chop and less stress on your wrist. The other significant change is a move from a full bolster (the section between the blade and the handle) to a half bolster. This change makes it easier to hold the knife while using (the proper way to hold a knife is to pinch the top of the blade just on the other side of the bolster and then wrap your fingers around the handle). Let’s give it a try.

The blade easily slices through these chicken thighs.

Have a big job? You need a big knife.

No problem here.

Time to chop.

A nice, smooth motion makes this easy.

My Take: First off, you need a good knife. No. That 20 year old, dull thing that you keep in the drawer does not qualify. If you want to make your time preparing meals a breeze, while reducing the risk that you may injure yourself or others, you need to upgrade your knife. So how about this one? What’s not to love? The WÜSTHOF 8″ Uber Cook’s Knife is the next generation of knife from one of the world’s top manufacturers of knives. With several improvements intended to make it easier for the chef to use, the WÜSTHOF 8″ Uber Cook’s Knife is a great addition to your knife collection. You can find the WÜSTHOF 8″ Uber Cook’s Knife at many retailers and online at major sites such as Williams Sonoma.
