Guacamole is Not For Dogs

Many people give human food to their dog. It’s a natural thing to do. You are at the table (or on the couch) eating something good and your dog, who has a much better sense of smell than you, smells it and comes over. Depending on your dog, and how they have trained you, you might give in to give them a bite.

My dog, Cody, who I have written about here and who passed away 18 months ago, did not train us very well. We set a rule that we never, ever fed him from the table (couch). Anything that was human food that we wanted to give him was put into his bowl (or in rare circumstances tossed outside if it was really messy). So we never had the jumping up to get food or the sad stare sitting at your foot.

While a lot of human food is not great for dogs (a lot of it is not great for humans either), there are some that can really be toxic. Foodbeast provided a list last year and I’d heard of many of these but some were new. Take a look here at more detail and what bad things can happen if your dog gets too much of it.

  1. Chocolate – Knew this one.
  2. Milk – Didn’t know this but never really thought of giving my dog milk.
  3. Cheese – Cody loved cheese.
  4. Onion – He would eat onion when it suited him.
  5. Macadamia Nuts – Way too expensive to give to the dog!
  6. Garlic – I’m sure bits of garlic made it into my dog, but not whole cloves.
  7. Grapes – Cody never liked the texture.
  8. Avocados – Didn’t know about this one and never tried it.
  9. Apple Cores – I’m sure working dogs on fruit farms eat these a lot.
  10. Yeast Dough – Kinda specific.
  11. Caffeine – Didn’t know this but wouldn’t ever want my dog wired on coffee.
  12. Bacon – What? The food of the gods? Good. More for me.

Guacamole

Prep Time: 1 hr 20 min |Servings: 1 batch | Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
1 lime, juiced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 medium onion, diced
1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 clove garlic, minced

Directions:

In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, jalapeno, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.

Useful list for dog owners – I’ve heard different views on garlic though but all of the others sound familiar, well apart from bacon!
