Product Review: WÜSTHOF Seven Piece Traveler Knife Set

The Ranting Chef does not get paid or receive any revenue from manufactures or retailers of products reviewed. I occasionally receive products that I am asked to use and see what I think. I take a look, try them out and tell you all about them.

A box came a few weeks ago from WÜSTHOF. For those who are not familiar with the company, they are one of the premier German knife makers. A seventh-generation family owned company, they have been making knives in Solingen since 1814.

New for this year, WÜSTHOF has put together their Seven Piece Traveler Set.

Knives and travel? The more you cook, the more your knives become an extension of you in the kitchen. Any chef worth their salt, wants to have a good set of knives wherever they will be cooking. As summer is soon to be upon us, many home chefs will be cooking at the picnic, at a cabin, a camp site, on a boat or even at the beach. Tailgating in the fall? You cannot be caught without a good set of knives.

This Seven Piece Traveler Set includes three knives, a sharpener, a set of shears and a corkscrew.

The set has a flap the folds over the knifes to protect them (and you).

First, the corkscrew. No picnic or concert in the park is complete without a bottle of wine. The shears work well from opening sealed packages of meats to cutting through chicken bones.

The 3 ½” paring knife made short work in peeling these cucumbers.

The 6″ Cook’s knife has great balance and weight and just feels right in your hand. It is sharp. I really mean it as I just brushed against the blade and paid for it. As with any knife, it will dull over time but with this set you have your sharpener at the ready.

The 5″ Serrated Utility Knife easily cut through this baguette without smashing it.

My Take: Whenever I needs to take knives everywhere I would take some old knives, wrap them in towels and hope for the best. The knives were never sharp and often times found their way free of the towels, causing damage to themselves and other things around them. A good set of knives is important to any home chef. A perfect gift for Mother’s or Father’s Day for the cook on the go. The Seven Piece Traveler Set can be purchased here.

I can’t believe how apposite this post is and I thank you for. A friend was just bemoaning the fact that no matter how expensive or exclusive the holiday villa you inevitably tear your hair out because the knives are cr*p. This looks like set I need to buy. Wüsthof is the BEST.
