A Shark at Dairy Queen

One of the shows that I watch regularly is The Shark Tank. When I first heard about it, I didn’t think much of it. As I am an old married guy without much of a social life, I found that on Friday nights it would come on the television and I was drawn to it. For those unfamiliar with the show, 4 millionaires and 1 billionaire (called Sharks) hear a business pitch from someone with a new product, service or company and they make offers to invest.

One Shark, Mark Cuban, is the billionaire. Cuban is the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and has gotten in trouble with the league repeatedly for criticizing the league, and most importantly, the officiating. After one frustrating season, he commented that he wouldn’t hire the head of the league’s officiating crew to manage a Dairy Queen.

Dairy Queen, as you might imagine, took umbrage at the implication that managing one of their locations was an easy thing to do. In an effort to make their point, they invited Cuban to come work at one of their locations to see what it was really like.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect Mark Cuban. He not only paid the significant fine to the NBA for his comments (reportedly $500,000), he took Dairy Queen up on their offer. In the two hours he worked there, they served over a thousand customers and even ran out of ice.

I bet Cuban didn’t serve anything as good as this sorbet.
