The 1970’s and 1980’s had a host of commercials that tried to highlight two different facets of a product by creating a mock debate. The most famous example was the Miller Lite commercials. One famous former athlete would proclaim that Miller Lite had “great taste”. Another would state it was “Less Filling”. They would repeat those phrases throughout the commercial.
Another one was made for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Generally one person would walk, fall or some other movement that would cause their chocolate to end up in someone else’s peanut butter. The debate would begin, “you put your chocolate in my peanut butter” and would continue “no, you put your peanut butter in my chocolate!” Then there would be a taste and all parties would be happy about the combination.
This is how it is for salty and sweet. I have a big sweet tooth. I love chocolate, ice cream, pies, cakes and so many other sweet things. I also have a big love for salty foods. Potato chips and pretzels don’t last long in my house.
When you put the two together, it is even better. Salt will elevate the flavor of many chocolates.
This is a great dessert or snack and perfect for a party.
Not much to the ingredients list.
Lay out the pretzels on some parchment paper over a cookie sheet.
Make the caramel.
You have to keep mixing!
Pour it over the pretzels.
After being int he oven.
Add chocolate and return to the oven. A perfect combination!
Salted Caramel Pretzel Bark
Ingredients:
- 2 sticks of butter
- 1 cup of light brown sugar
- 1 reg. bag of pretzels (you’ll use about 3/4 of the bag)
- 12 ounce bag of chocolate chips
- Sea salt – ( I use our coarse sea salt with our grinder)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400.
Line a large bar pan with parchment paper, cover with pretzels
In a medium saucepan melt the butter over medium-low heat. When it begins to bubble add the brown sugar.
Stirring occasionally let the butter/sugar mixture meld together and brown. This should take about 3 minutes. Do NOT let it boil, you will have sticky goo that is no good.
When you have a nice, brown caramel pour it over the pretzels, slowly and evenly. You can then use a spatula to spread it out, you have to work quickly and gently. It hardens fast so even pouring is the best method.
Bake the sheet for 5 minutes.
Remove the sheet from the oven and sprinkle the whole bag of chocolate chips evenly over the mixture.
Place back in the oven for about 45 seconds. If you let it sit there too long the chocolate will burn.
Remove from the oven and use a silicone spatula to evenly spread the chocolate over the top.
Sprinkle with sea salt and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour.
