Where’s The Beef?

It is amazing how much advertising permeates our lives. It is everywhere. Bad advertising is laughable but when it is good, it not only makes you think positively of a product (or person) but moves you to buy it (or buy into it).

At the end of the last century (boy do I feel old phrasing it that way), Advertising Age Magazine created a list of the top 100 ad campaigns of the 20th century. I find the ones that are the most familiar to me are the ones in the later half of the century. I think this is for two reasons. First, I lived in the last 31 years of the century, so I saw many of these ads “live”. The second, is television. As ads went to TV, many of them have been replayed well beyond the product campaign in retrospectives.

Here are some interesting tidbits from the list:

  • The number one ad campaign was for the Volkswagen Beetle – “Think Small”. Recognized as revolutionary at its time, it made a very different kind of statement about its product.
  • There is not much of a surprise that Coca-Cola is on the list three times (the most). Their campaigns are: “The Pause that Refreshes (1929)”, “It’s the Real Thing (1970)” and “Always (1993)”.
  • Pepsi Cola (the only other repeating product) has two on the list. “Pepsi Cola Hits the Spot (1940s)” and “The Pepsi Generation (1964)”.
  • The most unusual medium was the repeating road sign with Burma-Shave.
  • A number of slogans created for these campaigns ring well into my memory: “You deserve a break today (McDonald’s 1971)”, “Tastes Great, Less Filling (Miller Lite 1974)” and “Where’s the Beef? (Wendy’s 1984)”.

Take a look at the Top 100 ad campaigns of the 1900’s here.

You might ask “Where’s the beef?” with this stroganoff as it is made with ground turkey.

Notice what else is missing from traditional stroganoff? No noodles. Yup, this is a low carb version.

For those not low-carbbing it, you can serve over noodles, or even fill a tortilla.

This is my second attempt to comment – I’m logged in but stupid WordPress keeps telling me I’m not logged in. Argh!

This is a delicious recipe and I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing it with us. Speaking of advertising: the famous Coca Cola Christmas truck is currently touring the UK and it visited Cardiff, where I live, yesterday. As the star attraction of our Christmas market, the truck attracted huge crowds. Holidays are coming ad campaign from 1995 must surely feature among the top 100!

I remember “Where’s the Beef”, and the Marlboro Man. I liked it first because it had a horse in it, and second hubba hubba- a cowboy! Forget the cigarettes! Your recipe sounds so good. I will have to try it. Collect it anyway.
